Whether you seek tranquility in a hut deep in the forest, or suddenly have to seek shelter from bad weather in the mountains, nowhere in the world is the offer of open cabins greater than in Norway.

 Small and simple huts with many names

A wilderness hut, shelter hut, simple cabin, backcountry hut, bivouacs, emergency and medical cabin is a free, primitive mountain hut for temporary accommodation, usually located in wilderness areas, national parks and along backpacking and hiking routes.

These Huts are usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge. The hut is basic and unmanned, without running water.
