Island hopping is often associated with ferry transport between islands, but this is not necessarily a correct definition of the term island hopping. Hvaler has no mainland and conists only of islands. However, the four islands Vesterøy, Spjærøy, Asmaløy and Kirkøy have roads and a connection to the mainland, and there are bridges between the islands. These four islands are well suited for island hopping and excursions by bike or on foot. These islands are large compared to the other Hvaler islands (see map below).

YOU ARE WELCOMED TO THE ISLAND HERFØL BY THE SCENT OF FRESH CINNAMON BUNS AND TWO NICE WOMEN BEHIND THE COUNTER IN THE SUMMER-OPEN GENERAL STORE "PÅ POSTEN". READ MORE ABOUT HERFØL ISLAND HERE.

It is possible to travel by ferry all day with just one return ticket and to embark/disembark whenever you like. The Hvaler Ferries have 19 daily depatures from Skjærhalden and bring you to a fantastic archipelago.

There are no cars on the islands where the ferries call. All of the islands are a fantastic paradise for hiking. The islands Søndre Sandøy and Nordre Sandøy are definetely the best ones for biking. The island Herføl is sligtly smaller than the latter two, but bringing a bike here vcan be advantageous for getting more quickly into the great outdoors and to the fantastic rocks and potholes. The Lauer islands are small and best suited for walks.

Key Figures About the Hvaler Archipelago

There are so many lovely islands in the Hvaler archipelago that it is unlikely that you will be able to visit them all in your lifetime. When spatial statistics is being used to describe the Hvaler islands, one number is repeated time and time again: 833 islands, islets and reefs. The source for this number is unknown. It is however completely wrong. Hvaler's area of 87 square kilometers consists of a total of 2,775 islands, islets and reefs. The smallest reef is 1.3 square meters and the largest island is 30 square kilometers. Hvaler's coastline is 691 kilometers long.
